Province:
Sichuan

Type Locality and Naming

Southernmost Sichuan. The Huangtian Fm was named by Yang Xianhe in 1976. The type section is in Xinjietian-Xinping, Yanbian County, Sichuan Province. Lowermost formation-level unit of Yanbian Gr.

Lithology and Thickness

In the typical section, the Huangtian Fm is composed of grey green metamorphosed volcanic rock and minor metamorphosed sedimentary rock. Lower part consists of metamorphosed pillow basalt, basaltic volcanic breccia, sandwiched with sericite slate, green schist of 758 m thick. Middle part, 690 m thick, is of siliceous slate, slate, phyllite and chert, occasionally sandwiched with metamorphosed basalt. Upper part, 1490 m thick, consists of metamorphosed basalt (trachybasalt and anamesite [anamesite is a term for basaltic rocks which are between basalt and dolerite in texture]), metamorphosed basalt breccia, with minor siliceous slate. The top consists of metamorphosed andesite, metamorphosed andesitic tuffaceous breccia. It is <3000 thick.
